A message from Creative Director Rita Brame and Editor-in-Chief Hart Fowler

The Whole is Greater than the Sum of its Parts, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, and Beyond

Ten years ago, it was the grass-roots and collective effort of the community that led to a five-year run with 41 issues, many events, and a dozen murals.

By the last issue of the first run we had worked with over 200 Creative Contributors.

Nearly all the work was Pro Bono, with writers, visual artists, graphic designers, digital designers, stiltwalkers, musicians, all donating their time for a common good. Many of those used clips of their work with 16 Blocks as a stepping stone to grow in professional creative fields.

For that we are forever grateful.

We hope you join in the effort to tend the creative fires that burn within us all, and help us to carry the flame into 16 Blocks 2.0, reLaunched in Print and Online in September of 2023.

Woofdog — Commissioned by “Untagging the Town” 2013

We look to CULTIVATE long-term relationships and always be meeting new creative contributors.  We look forward to the opportunity of working with the wealth of diverse talent, young and old, amateurs and pros, to explore Blacksburg and Beyond.

Sincerely Rita and Hart
